EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
