The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
