A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
