Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
